We pulled 8 kittens varying in age from 6 to 12 weeks and 7 adults last week. We contacted every foster on file asking if they were still available but what with the holidays, I think people are reluctant to commit..and understandably so. We will revisit that in the fall. Some of our student fosters responded and were looking forward to fostering again but aren’t arriving til the end of the month.
So we scrambled to figure out spaces. Many were finished their buffer time and were ready for foster homes but we had only one. Alex’s mind was racing. A crate or 2 would work housing some (not the best scenario but better than being dead and only interim while we shuffle) so that had to be hauled over and set up. Alex moved one and adopted out one. Contact was made with a recent foster app – not sure what the outcome was of that, hoping to place one that is done her buffer time. She doesn’t do well with other cats.
Two of the kittens that were pulled were vomiting and had diarrhea: contact with foster mom, medication ordered and picked up as well as some specialty food. 2 kittens from another litter had to be euthanized due to severe neurological issues (damage in utero), and 3 had to be moved from one foster home to others in order to provide more opportunity for socializing.
Cats coming into care, cats being moved, plans for who can take which one and when, litter purchased, supplies dropped off….and a fundraiser this weekend where 2 KK board members and volunteers are working.
As I was driving a friend, my phone kept alerting me (audible announcement) to text messages from 2 different people. She commented about my ‘popularity’ but I explained they were all KK texts and not people wanting to ‘chat’. When she heard of how many cats are euthanized a year she understood why we do what we do…and of course, the demands on our time required to be part of a rescue.
Seems like we had things sorted out and settled when we received another notice from Animal Services:
2 Neutered males
3 Unneutered males
2 Kittens about 12 weeks
Mom and 5 kittens, about 6 weeks
Mom and 2 kittens, about 5 weeks
Pick up by Tuesday 5:00 p.m.
No wonder I feel nauseous.
