He was a good friend to all of them as well as to his cat and dog friends. He loved dogs sooo much, he thought he was one. For such a little guy he had a way of making his presence known, both vocally and in body. Simon is and always will be deeply missed.”

This girl was considered for euthanasia because of her grumpy appearance and fearful behaviour. Once in her forever home, Satarah (persian queen) hid for weeks. It took months before she let others near but with patience and love, Satarah grew to trust. Mom wanted a cuddler but Satarah with the cotton candy fur was not one to be held but oh could she make her mom laugh – that crabby little face, the croaky demanding meow, the snoring, the appetite for human food, the Tim Conway old man trot…. Gail Bailey, Lorraine Prontack and Lori Golab have made memorial donations in Satarah’s memory. They know how much joy she gave to her mom. You left too soon my precious crabby faced little girl…my Satarah, you left too soon.
A donation was made in memory of Theo by Jessica Larsen
From the moment Theo entered our lives he brought an incredible light and joy to them. He enriched our lives with his kind and loving nature, his weird and goofy personality, and his unconditional love for us. I honestly believe that he and I were meant to be together and although our time together was far too short I feel so blessed to have known him.
A donation was made in memory of a little Marmalade cat who provided sixteen years of loving companionship to the Halpert family. He was deeply loved and dearly missed.
In honour of sweet Annie who lived a long life, a donation was made by her mom, Linda Love. Linda also parted with some of Annie’s belongings which are being enjoyed by cats in foster care.
How could we not take Festivus, who sat up on his haunches and begged, pumping his crooked legs up an down and croaking that plaintive meow? This poor old fellow was terribly matted and gaunt. Rescued on Christmas Eve, Festivus was shaved of his mats and lived happily for six weeks with his foster family of cats and a dog. He so enjoyed the comforts of a quiet home. This sweet soul spend his last night on his foster mom’s bed, staring at her face as he would do every night, and then laying close to her and his foster sister. He died peacefully in her arms the next day. His foster mom still grieves deeply for him, as he fought so hard to live. Although abandoned and found wandering alone, Festivus knew love and security for the last weeks of his life.
Taken from the Shelter on the opening day of the Winter Olympics, Wayne (Gretzky) had such terrible wounds, he was to be put to sleep. We are unsure if he was in a fight or was caught in a car engine. Kitty Kare took him immediately to the vet but many of his wounds could not be stitched closed. The vet did not charge us the full cost for his care, while a doctor at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Center heard about his plight and paid the entire bill. His foster mom cleaned his wounds and applied medication twice a day for six weeks but unfortunately it was discovered that Wayne was suffering from blastomycosis, a serious fungal disease. His foster mom was with him stroking his little face, telling him he was loved as the vet put him to sleep.
Omar was hiding behind his litter box as well as in it and he was afraid. He was greatly stressed but did not try to bite or scratch when Kitty Kare placed him in a carrier. He spent his first night in his foster home hiding under the bed. The next day, his foster mom crawled under the bed to be with him. She blinked at him slowly several times and Omar blinked back. He knew she would not hurt him. Omar began to respond to her, wanting to trust, exposing his tummy for some rubs, lowering his head and pushing it into her. Sadly, Omar began to vomit a few days later and was diagnosed with distemper. He was put to sleep while relaxing under the gentle strokes of his foster mom.
Dawson was rescued by Tony and Gloria who snatched him off the road after he was struck by a car. They paid for his vet care and Dr. Tallon recognized his special spirit and called Kitty Kare. He was a stray and was to go to Animal Services where he would have been euthanized. Kitty Kare removes and places cats like Dawson into foster homes. Foster dad Walter opened his heart despite having foster cats and several cats of his own as we did not have a place for Dawson. Sadly, after a few days luxuriating in Walter’s love, chatty little Dawson became sick. He tried to conquer distemper but to no avail. Walter rushed him to our vet one evening to end his suffering. Our consolation was that Dawson experienced love, lots of good food, and a warm cozy bed to sleep on…likely the first time in his short life. Dawson….the little boy who tried so hard to survive….he’ll never be forgotten. Please, please keep your cats indoors so there will never be another Dawson. Spay and neuter your pets. Cats are not throw aways.
A donation was made by owners Gail and Norm Bailey in memory of Jugs, family pet and St. John’s Ambulance Therapy Dog. Jugs loved doing his work and he was well loved by all who knew him. Jugs visited schools as well, as he was one of two certified to do so.
Jugs also participated in the city’s Remembrance Day service every year. What a deserving honour that was. He was the model therapy dog: gentle, calm and sensitive to the needs of the residents/patients he visited. Jugs was even invited to the funeral of a resident who adored him. What an honour. Jugs is greatly missed by his family. There will never be another Jugs.
Six kittens covered in excrement and after-birth…only a day old – were all scheduled to be euthanized. Mom was stressed. Kitty Kare took them into foster care. Weebles was the pick of the litter but at 3 weeks showed symptoms of hypomyelination: a defect resulting in poor movement coordination, muscle atrophy and general weakness. Weebles would manoeuvre himself on his side and prop himself up. Consultations determined that Weebles was not in pain. The precious boy would leap like a bunny when he could get his feet under him and would love to play. Harrison, his brother seemed to have a special attachment to him. Weebles was adopted by a foster family with 2 daughters who doted on him. Foster mom would have spa days for Weebles, dad would construct wheeled devices to help Weebles manoeuvre, other foster cats would play with him…he was deeply loved. The dog alerted the family that something was wrong one October morning. Weebles was dead -likely due to a stroke. He picked the time to leave; before the parents left for a conference. Weebles was just 6 months old but experienced a lifetime of love….but if only we could see and hold that little gentle soul again.
This beautiful young boy was scheduled to be euthanized due to his behaviour. Kitty Kare took a chance, believing he was simply petrified and needed time. He was put in a large kennel in a busy area of his foster home so he could become accustomed to noise and action. Later he moved to a bedroom where foster mom would spend time with him, playing with him, rubbing his belly, even sleeping with him through the night. Gradually Chuckles came out of his shell and became the goofy boy we expected him to be. Sadly though, he became sick and needed to be euthanized. Our only comfort was that he spent the last month of his life, being loved. Foster mom was with him when he was put to sleep.
Many kittens such as Tobi, Cornelius and this wee Himalayan are taken into Kitty Kare. Our goal is to give them a chance to thrive despite the neglect and trauma they have been through. Unfortunately, despite all the supportive and at times, vet care, many many do not survive and they die in foster care. It is heartbreaking for foster parents who want so badly for these ones to thrive and experience a forever home. Our consolation is that these little innocents do experience a warm, secure, quiet place during their last days…..and the touch of a loving human hand instead of the ones that left them to die.

“We didn’t set out to get a cat that cold day in February 2004. I was more curious about a grey calico that the City Shelter had up for adoption. When we got there, the calico was gone but again, curiosity made me ask to see what was available. A little spotted tabby/siamese cross lay quietly in her cage, paying no attention to us while the other cats begged for release. I asked to hold her and I was hooked. From day one she was quiet, gentle and oh so cuddly. Quirky, tolerant…and oh so vocal. Even though these crazy quirks and noisy conversations drove us nuts at times, we would oh so much love to hear them again.” In memory of Sable, loved by Carol and Ron Fuchek.
