Let Nature take its course

A text last night from a buffer/foster mom concerned that her pregnant rescue, Hermione, just pulled on Friday, had vomited and had diarrhea. After some questions and answers, we decided to wait and see before I ran over with some specialty food and sure enough….a  phone conversation at 6:30 this morning: Hermione had given birth to one baby so far, in the litter box and just left the baby there.

Buffer mom was worried that momma cat would not care for it as she was not paying any attention to it. I suggested that she clean off the litter using a paper towel – something with no scent – and place the newborn with mom.  As buffer mom needed to go to work, we thought we’d let nature take its course. There was little we could do and we hope that momma’s instincts will over ride her fear.  These cats that have babies are often just babies themselves….. poor thing.

I suggested that buffer mom call Marlys later as she is the most experienced at this.  I’m feeling like Prissy, Scarlett O’Hara’s maid in ‘Gone with the Wind’….”I don’t know nothin’ about birthin’ babies!!!”

We’ll see what the day brings…………

Hermione and her 3 babies are all doing well:) When I came home from work she was snuggled up with litterbox baby (whom I had cleaned off and placed in the nesting box) and two others who were born after I had to leave. She was as happy as can be and the little ones were suckling away. Poor girl didn’t know what was happening and then the instinct kicked in.
